Ewing Change Consulting Success Stories
Case Study 4: Change Management Strategy
The Client: CEO & Senior Team, Construction and Mining Equipment Company The Goal: Rebuilding the Refurbishers
The background: Creating success was not the problem. The CEO of this construction equipment company was proud of building his business from the ground up – literally. He started with an empty field, bought five pieces of large mining equipment and turned it into a thriving business that refurbished and sold used mining and construction equipment. The company grew into a $200M a year operation.
Maintaining success was the challenge. The CEO had some standards in place, but many complex de facto work processes were not working well. More importantly, the senior team was riddled with conflict. These stumbling blocks were keeping the company from attaining further growth. The CEO knew that he had to make changes and was looking for a solution.
The CFO, after hearing change management consultant, Esther Ewing speak, invited her to meet the CEO and the senior team, where she was asked to create a strategy that would help them seek a resolution.
The solution: Look at the process. Ewing facilitated a meeting of the extended leadership team and discussed how a piece of equipment passed from being purchased to being fixed to being sold and shipped out the door. The investigation helped identify the hazy or unclear parts of the process including who was the process owner. The first step in the change management strategy was to place a trusted member of the staff, who was under-utilized, in charge of improving and clarifying the process.
Reforging the team. With the process on its way to being streamlined, Ewing was invited back to the company to work with senior executives. She met with senior team members individually and provided some coaching and guidance that boosted confidence and strengthened team interaction.
The result: The unexpected. A downturn in the economy and pressure from financiers forced the company to auction most of its assets. While coaching was curtailed, senior members who had received coaching gained sufficient clarity in career goals to make good personal career decisions for the future.
